Okay, I'm going to buy into this whole thread with my two cents.

Let me paraphrase a killer question from and test I took many years ago in an introductory physics class.

Metal expands as it is heated and contracts as it cools. We all know this, right? Okay, earlier posting have eluded to the fact that the tubing in a tuba will get a little longer as it is heated. But, the cross-section of the tubing is going to change also. I will tell you that the outside diameter of the tubing will increase.

Here's the question: What will happen to the inside diameter of the tubing? Will it also increase as the ouside of the tubing pulls on it? Or, will in decrease as the metal expands and pushes the innner wall towards the center?

As to the tuning question: You should alsways listen the the rest of the ensemble and adjust your pitch to match.
