I cannot play very well at all on hair. I can play "OK" on a 5-o'clock shadow (actually kinda hurts). I play W-A-A-A-A-Y best on bare skin.
I have the same problems you do with bare skin...blisters/irritation.
If I manage to practice at least an hour a day (a lot more is necessary for these kiddies who are trying to get an orchestra job) I can keep a not-visually-noticeable-to-others callous on my face above and below my lips. If I've been away from playing for a few days, I "get through" the callous reforming period with 1% cortisone ointment until the callous has properly re-formed.
