What works for me may not work for you, but my tongue placement varies a good bit especially in the extreme low range. From around low G and F and below I use the tip of my tongue in slight contact with my lips. There is plenty of room between my teeth, and I find that I aim for the inside bottom of my upper lip; in a mirror I can actually see my tongue in the aperture.

For the rest of my range the tongue is generally behind/above the upper teeth in the "standard" spot, depending on what kind of release I want on the note- it varies from a hard "T" to a very soft "D", to maybe no tongue at all.

Because of differences in anatomy from player to player, everyone's "sweet spot" will be in different places. I think it's important to start with the generic "toe" tongue placement in all registers, and then experiment to find what works best for the individual.
