I also attended a contest last weekend (Smokey Mountain Festival I think it was, at S. Doyle HS in Knoxville, TN), where my son's band won Sweepstakes. They are a VERY good band, with the most listenable music I've yet heard from a football field, great visual stuff, really a crowd pleasing show; but a little loose on marching (not musical)precision. There was another band -- who our band beat in the Sweepstakes by one a margin of just one judge (3-2). They did a show of very difficult to play -- and difficult to listen to -- music, with very precise drill. A yawnfest, but extremely well done. I thought sure our band would lose to them, but in the final judging entertainment won over 'high art'.

So I think it just depends on where you are.

Joe Baker, who thinks there's a place for art, and the football field ain't it.
