Call me old fashioned, but spending five to twelve grand on a Willson or Hirsbrunner euphonium for a high school freshman is ridiculous. I don’t care if mom and dad are rolling in the green.

I doubled on a Yamaha 321 for about 25 years till I wore out the valves. This instrument is very popular in Los Angeles, where commercial doubling is the name of the game, and where compensation euphonium snobbery is not the norm. Other good euphoniums out there are the Weril 980, Jupiter 470L and 570L. Im sure most will laugh at my suggestions, but any of the above horns will do a young high schooler just fine. They all can play in tune, and have a beautiful warm sound. Tell the parents to take the money they save, and pay for more lessons.

Let the flames begin,

Kenny Jay
