Here, Here! I could not agree with you more. An F is not a CC, and should not be expected to act like one. I also look for a horn with ring and pizazz, particularly in the mid' and upper ranges. After all, that's where I'm going to primarily play the horn. I have recorded with a brass quintet where I was really concerned about some low passages that felt like sawdust in the mouth while playing them, but sounded great on the recording. I tried the same passages on a CC, and although it felt better to me as I played it, it sounded no better on the recording. F tubas can be really deceptive that way.
By the way, Karl, if your Alex F plays like Dr. Jerry Young's Alex F, then you have one great horn.
