If it's a small dent and the brass hasn't already been cold-worked to death and isn't ancient, you don't usually need to anneal (heat it until it glows dull red). Yes, annealing will burn off lacquer, but if you're careful, it may do nothing more than tarnish silverplate.

If I'm not sure, I'll anneal tuning-slide crooks before de-denting because very often these can be quite brittle from bending. But on straight sections or large branches, you usually don't have to worry about it.
