I have an Olds trombone whose lacquer started to drip off while being left in the hot, hot sun at its first band camp. I haven't bothered to finish the job, so for now, it has lots of "character", as we like to call it!

So, yeah, try exceptionally hot water first -- it's the least abrasive, and it's not a harsh chemical at all (unless your water is REALLY dirty! :-) ). As usual, take more precautions than you'd think would be necessary, and have fun.

Seeya,
Leland
