Indeed he did!! I did a little dance of joy when I heard that he had won. Remember,though at the Met or any opera gig, people aren't there to hear the orchestra only, so the orchestra must show some restraint and provide the proper balance with the singers. This, in addition to the fact that Chris is a WONDERFUL player, helped him to beat the 6/4 crowd at this audition.
I'm with you though....the player wins the gig, not the horn! But part of wnning the gig is playing with the sound that the conductor and your potential brass colleagues want to hear. As long as brass playing in this country remains as athletic as it currently is, that is what committees will listen for.
