Most tubas (period) are so-so. I you have some money together and stumble across an extraordinary tuba built in ANY key, get it, because you will find great use for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be in that much of a hurry. There are plenty of tubas in all sorts of configurations out there when you have money. In the meantime, you have access to a useable school-owned instrument, I would guess. I hope that you are able to discern between the mediocre-usable tubas and the extraordinary ones. All of our lives have limits. We might as well do (and use) the best that we can.
