If the friction screw bears directly on the rod, make a few modifications. Drill dimples at intervals (or the place you want it to be most of the time) with a 5/16" drill bit. Then grind or file the tip of the screw to a cone to match the dimple. It won't slip after that if you put the screw in a dimple.. You could file a straight groove too and file the cone on the screw.
