There are numerous people in the music world doing this same thing. A tuba playing example of this is John Stevens. He went to Eastman and studied tuba and composition. He worked for a while as a freelance musician in NYC playing with orchestras and the Broadway show "Barnum." He was the tuba teacher at the University of Miami and now teaches at the University of Wisconsin.
Actually most musicians in smaller orchestras (ie. Albany, Grand Rapids) have to supplement their income by working in other areas of music such as teaching, arranging and gigging.
