This is the type of help I was hoping to find... To clarify a couple of points, I'll just add that this is a BBb horn, in excellent condition --no dents (well, no big or important ones), tight, quiet valves, and no leaks.

I've played for 40 years (a scary thought, now that I think about it) and the horn appears to be in tune with itself. The cut-down suggestion came from a former tuba Prof at Ohio State who had the same model (or very similar) years earlier and had the surgery performed (successfully). They had worked out the needed cuts mathematically, but the numbers (and the horn) are no longer around.

I will spend some time with a tuner, as you suggest, and post the results before I even consider making a cut.
