I personally think the leader of the group is right. If your using all four octaves of your range and you're being "inventive", then you probably aren't supplying the necessary bassline for the group. When playing with the group you need to be aware of your role. Dixieland Jazz is not a "free for all". Everyone has a job to do that needs to fit in with what everyone else is doing. As a dixieland tubist you pretty much need to play two beat stuff, and keep a good solid beat. Occassionally on some slower stuff you might want to play walking basslines to keep the beat from dragging. And keep it in a range where you are still lower then everyone else. The root of the chord needs to be just that. If you start playing into your upper register and playing higher then the trombone then all of the sudden the group ends out with inverted chord strutures and voice crossings and all kinds of counterprodctive and cluttered stuff. Let the cornet play the lead stuff, and let the clarinet and trombone play counterpoint stuff. You should be concentrating on providing a good foundation for them. Then when you are given the oppurtunity to solo let her rip. The only time the tubist solos is when nobody else is playing though pretty much.
