I've experienced it both ways -- being a completely active participant, and being on autopilot (so much so that there was no need for me to step in when things began to rub, because they didn't even rub in the first place).
I'm not sure what the differences were in preparation, if any. I will say that all the preparation and confidence in the world won't guarantee a top level performance. The chances of experiencing it are increased, but nothing in a performance is ever a given.
However, one difference I've come to realize is in how much is on the table emotionally, so to speak. I'm still trying to figure that part out, though.
