I've done worse. I was going into my second year at Texas A&M, and intended to play in the Symphonic Band (a good group--I'd been fourth chair of four the previous year, with three former all-staters sitting to my right).
But I owned no tuba, and was playing a Besson owned by the university. So, my chops were in a poor state from a summer of no practicing. My plan was to woodshed the week before the audition, with the full realization that I was probably not going to make it.
I went in to practice the first day, and the director heard me and came into the practice room, saying, "Your audition time was this morning, but I can still take your audition right now if you want." AAAARRRRGGGG!!!! I'd misread the schedule.
So, I auditioned on cold, completely unpracticed chops, and sight-read the music.
Now, THAT was a waste of time.
