I must say that "dark" and "muddy" aren't interchangeable terms. I liked Hanks' sound for the most part (much more fun to listen to than Bobo, IMO), except that every once in a while I felt that he shouldn't have taken it as fast, or perhaps he should have taken it an octave up. There are times, whether you'll admit it or not, it's difficult to distinguish individual notes because he is playing so low and so fast. I didn't mean to say that the whole record, or even that whole piece was muddy. I apologize for the misunderstanding. It is impressive that he is able to do this on a 5/4 CC.

Having said this, I do agree that the F tuba is used too often when playing solos, and I wish there were more recordings of players on larger instruments. I would get this record myself, if I had the money. I'll admit though that my favorite piece on the record was in fact Dances, not Shores.
