Your own experiences are perfectly true. In-line mic placing gives a lot of treble. The most pleasant treble ccontents might come from an in-line, but off-axis placement.
Low(-s), that is fulness and warmth, comes from a more indirect soundpath to the mic.
What about using such a double set-up? That should leave you with a richness of choices in the mixing phase.
It almost goes without saying, that the ideal mic is not necessarily the same in the two different positions.
