I played one for a few years, and actually auditioned with it as one of the three "pretend" finalists in the "pretend" Utah Symphony audition many years ago (' already had their man).
The 188 is a good multi-purpose tuba, but is pretty stiff in the low range to rely on as a "big horn". I was trying to do the same thing, and gave up on it even though it has just about the best friggin' intonation of ANY CC tuba that I have ever played.
