Tubas are made of brass, a non-magnetic alloy. The magnet may pick up a few scraps of steel wool, but it won't remove any brass shavings at all. You will have a lot of fun trying to remove the bits of steel wool from the magnet, however.
Instead, if you decide to remove some metal, just clean it up with soap & water and a soft cloth. Don't forget to clean the inside too.
