No shots from me but I'd absolutely disagree with the Devil! If the band director is smart he's encouraging excellence in his players, not bringing things "closer to the mean". Would I rather have two mediocre players or one good one? I'll take the good one any day of the week. Besides, what about the incentive that this lessor player will have now to work harder and beat the better player out for the better equipment? And won't that also spur the better player to work harder to keep it? I think leaving it merit based means that the probability is more likely that both players will improve. Its worked for a number of years to this point, why wouldn't it now? All us Interlochen veterans will attest to that!
