The Chesnut Brass from Phila (Temple U.) performs on historic instruments in their concerts. If you ever have a chance to hear them do so. It is a very interesting, educational and fun concert. They usually do some renaissance things with cornettos and sackbuts, and then some Civil War era stuff, which they used on the Ewald. What a difference in sound! Having the upright bell alto horn play the third part rather than the french horn really changed the sound of the ensemble dramatically. Of course the Euph and cornets mellowed the sound a bit also, which probably made the alto horn timbre that much more noticable, since it was not as mellow as you are used to hearing with a horn. It was really something.
