Everything you've said is true, and most of it is just as you characterize it. I'd trade 99% of all 'new' music for a warm brownie and a tall glass of milk, and aristocracies of various professions -- music and religion included -- CAN get self-absorbed. But exchanges, whether it is guest conductors, guest lecturers, or guest preachers, can be worthwhile. **IF** you've established that a particular person is excellent at what they do, and if they have new insight or perspective to bring to the table, it is a good thing for them to take it on the road. As long as the parties are not exhorbitantly overpaid, which they usually are not, I don't think that's a part of the problem. But we should pay WAY more attention to what someone can do or what they know than we pay to what piece of paper they have from what ivy-covered tower.

Of course, whether a doctoral degree in performance makes ANY sense is another discussion altogether....
