Just a thought but have you checked the valves for leakage? This can sometimes cause a
horn to play flat. I have a 1912 Conn 3 valve upright with a 19" bell and it has some
of those symptoms, too. Part of them were cured by using a Conn 3 mouthpiece (sure wish
I could find another one of those) and Lee Stofer is replating and hand fitting the
valves to try the other "cure." If your lower (A natural, B and Bb and the pedals)notes are hard to make speak well, you may have a leak and that could exacerbate the problem.
The other thing I noticed in your post was that the second line Bb is well in tune. I would look in to that, as well, since most Eb tubas I have played tend to play that note
a little sharp if played open. Glad to see another fan of the old Conn Eb horns; they are
really neat, aren't they?
