How serious are you, and how low is your budget? I don't tape myself much, and have pretty pedestrian aspirations, but my recording device is my computer. I have a decent (NOT great) mike, and just use the 'record' program that's a part of Windows.
Not the greatest quality, and not so portable, but sure is CHEAP!!
