I think that they would both be good choices. If your son is the type who will really take care of the horn, I would probably go with the VMI. It is a very nice playing horn for the money, and it will look more like a new horn than an older used King. He also was leaning towards rotary valves, which the VMI has. Have you spoken to Mike Russo about this horn? If not, call and ask his opinion and make sure that it is still available. Good Luck.
