First I'd like to note that I'm totally an amateur (been playing for 10+ years though). I recently bought a F. Schmidt 2103 (VMI stencil as has been pointed out) from Charlie and I think it plays great. I found that it was particulary nice in the lower register(once again from an amateur's point of view). If you have the chance make sure your son gets to play it before or that wherever you buy it from has a good return policy. I had it my mind to buy a Cerveny before I found out about the 2103, and for me the 2103 definately played better. I don't have any knowledge about the King horns.
Good luck to you and your son,
-peter
