I started in 1974 in 6th grade on cornet. I wanted to move to F horn when my director asked who wanted to switch. He moved me to baritone instead. I taught myself trombone and bass clef in 9th grade so I can play in jazz band. I started lessons in 10th grade on baritone, but our band had a weak tuba player, so I switched to tuba (actually a sousaphone). During that year, I played tuba, baritone, and trombone, not at the same time. 11th grade, my private teacher said I act like a tuba player and I should concentrate on that. I'm still playing it 22 years later, though I have performed on everything from cornet to tuba, even played a concert with a HS band where I taught at on horn (one player was sick).
