A greasy/gritty compound called TRIPOLI is used on buffing wheels to remove bad scratches - thus significant material. This is sometimes called "cutting down".

A waxy/powdery (seems incongruent, doesn't it?) substance called JEWELER'S ROUGE (usually red) puts the final "mirror" finish on a surface.

One can go "easy" on the tripoli and fairly "heavy" (otherwise known as "regular") on the rouge, thus very shiny but very scratchy.
