Certainly the detachable bell on Rick D's York Master doesn't hurt a thing and it's a very heavy instrument. I also had a King 2341 with the big (21.5") detachable bell and it wasn't nearly as heavy as the YM and there the flange probably didn't do much for the horn. There's tanks and then there's tanks...the YM is definitely a TANK, where the King is merely a tank.

My big King "Bill Bell" BBb weighs a ton and has a detachable bell. I've had a chance to play the same model instrument configured with the 20" fixed upright bell and I liked the way the recording bell sounded (more "core"). But I'd attributed that to the bell and not the mounting ring, but maybe not.
