Just to clarify, the guys that are winning these orchestral auditions can be labeled as "tuba jocks" and are usually not the most musical? Well, musicality is a RELATIVE term, especially when your the TUBA player in the back of an orchestra. You should be capable of blowing the walls down or atleast playing at loud volumes. You make it sound like the guys winning are just loud machines. Point is this....you don't have to be Pablo Casals to play tuba in a major symphony orchestra AND these "tuba jocks" that are picked by a committee are picked by a conductor and other principal musicians, so they don't suck and I'm sure they throw a "hairpin" in here and there for musicality sake.
