Interesting observation Bill. I've noticed that trend too but I wonder if most non-tuba players actually prefer that the tuba sound blend into the ensemble rather than stick out so that you can hear it readily(atleast on most pieces). While the Willson is definetly an easier horn to play loudly I've also been to performances using B&Ss in which the tubist blew the walls down so I wonder if the player is the bigger factor in the equation. Maybe the kind of folks that buy Willsons place a higher premium on being able to knock down walls and as a result are drawn to a horn that more easily allows them to do just that.
