I'm wondering if this was an "over the shoulder" horn that was converted to an upright. In that case, the bell would have rested on the left shoulder horizontally and the mouthpiece would have been on the top bow, center, pointing in the same direction as the bell. The photo shows a standard leadpipe configuration...perhaps this was an early "custom conversion". While doing some research on my family history, I discovered a distant relative who had been a Civil War Bandsman.
