I can see your point about the leadpipe placement and I concede that it would be awkward to play this horn with the valves on the right hand. Still, I can also see how it could be done and the holding position I envision has a big advantage: the weight of the horn would be supported by the right hand/arm in a very advantageous posture. That being the same motion as one does an exercise called "curls". This involves the inside muscles of the upper arm (called the bicep muscle I believe) which is the strongest muscle in the arm. Of course, the tension of holding up the horn with the right arm would have a detrimental effect on the smooth operation of the valves using the hand of the same arm. Maybe this is why the photo in question was taken in 1863 and we haven't seen a modern incarnation of this same design? An intersting idea anyway. Congrats on your trombone acquisition.
