It's been years since I listened to the Lind recording, but I recall that the version he played did not have those figures in them.
I agree totally, though, that those patterns do not seem characteristic of the tuba. I try (mostly unsuccessfully) to apply really extreme dynamics to them. The first group at mf, the second at ppp, and the third with a robust forte, for example, just to give it some direction. Trying to keep them light and bouncy is always a real challenge for me.
