I used to work in a music store at the sheet music dept. A story was told to me of a choir director with a limited budget buying only one copy of an octavo for his choir to perform in a concert. It was a new piece of music the composer had a relative who attended the concert and told him about it. He in turn mentioned the peformance to his publisher who investigated and found out that the choir director had only paid for on copy of the music and photocopied the rest. He was fired from his job.
I don't know any names or places only that my source was a reliable person.
