Well, a popular mod to the old 184's was to add a Besson Bell,
perhaps there's something folks think special about them Lew?
It is definately a lil-lookin' tuba as well as stats-wise little,
perhaps a questfora good all-round but little BQ tuba was the reason?
I'm told that on some Bob's horns a removable leadpipe was kept,
and that the 5th valve rotor (before the piston set) was simply
added to an additional leadpipe. Two people with horns like this
that I've talked to said the only difference on their tubas between
the straight leadpipe andthe 5th valved leadpipe was easier more immediately
accurate intonation down in the low money register.I think the foto of this
specific horn reflects to MY mind what I'd call a "custom" horn
more than a "cut" one though, as it appears the whole valve BODY
was added to bell, bow, and branches of the besson. A cut horn would (in my mind)
start with a whole tuba and use most all of it, just with shortened bugle through the length of the horn and respectively-shortened valve branches. I own a CUT horn Bob did, and the lownotes on it are great and the rest of the scale and range are not deadened at all. I think if this were the case with the design not many Getzen G-50-type horns would
sell, and honestly every pro I know has nothing but good to say about those
horns! To the original poster: why not call Mr Fedderly and ask him about the "Besson"?
