I would have to agree on the New York Philharmonic recording of Shostakovich 5, circa 1959-1960 on Sony Classical. This was recorded right after the Phil.'s return from a historic concert tour in the Soviet Union. Shostakovich himself attended the concert given by the Phil. in Moscow. At the time, assuming his opinion had not changed in the last years of his life, Shostakovich preferred the interpretation of Bernstein over any other American conductor. I also have to recommend the St. Louis Symphony with Leonard Slatkin (Pokorny, Tuba) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Andre Previn (Arnold Jacobs, Tuba). Both of these recordings are great as well. However, Rostropovich does a fine job with the National Symphony Orchestra. Supposedly, Shostakovich asked Rostropovich to record all 15 of his symphonies shortly before he died. Either way, you can't go wrong with any of these recordings. They all have plenty to offer.
Hope this helps!
