Please note I have not played this tuba.
With that being said, this 186 would be an excellent choice.
First - It has a good vintage and has the 16(1/2)" bell. I prefer this much more over the new 186 bell with the 17-1/2" bell. The sound tends to stay a little darker and more focused with more projection in general.
Second - This horn has the 2-3 setup on the fifth valve. Even though I don't go out of my way for this layout, it can be quite interesting and functional. Also, it would give you a real double pedal C for those constant "Encounters II" performances. Low F is quite good 5-2-3 on these horns.
Third - The seller has made public the reason for the replacement for this horn. Chuck is replacing it with a Marzan CC which is a rare horn with very good and unique playing characteristics.
Fourth - This horn could be sold far at least what you pay for it, unless it is damaged significantly.
I don't know Chuck personally, but I highly recommend a horn like this whenever they come available.
