That plastic rim on the bell that Lee described was what I was talking about. It will damp ringing. I can damp the ringing of the bell on my YM with the tip of one finger lightly touching the rim of the bell.
The crease in the bell provides a flange that greatly increases the stiffness of the bell's edge in the ringing direction. Air-conditioning contractors put slight corner-to-corner creases in flat sheet-metal duct panels to accomplish the same thing.
