Klaus may be on to something here.

Consider the bottom of a galvanized bucket, or washtub. Intentionally made with concentric waves in the metal adding strength and stiffness. Or the corrugated tin used to sheath industrial buildings. Those wrinkles are there for strength.

So a tuba bell might ring less if it had its own set of corrugations. But it wouildn't look as pretty.
