Chuck in my humble opinion removing the fifth might just open her up a bit more if anything. Intonation should not be affected enough that you can tell a drastic difference. At this point thought you might be willing to try anything. I once had the fifth removed from the lead pipe and had it placed down after the fourth like the MW's and could not tell a difference. This was a big MArtin cut to CC and the intonation was a bear on it too but the sound was to die for, so much core. I had a tuning jigger built on the main and it helped a bunch. Second space C was still hard to bring up depending on the weather and the groups overall pitch. This was during the 4 years I spent in the Army Band(not a DC band) so pitch varied ALOT. After leaving the Army I decided I needed something that worked better for me playing in an orchestra that tunes to A442!
Good Luck!
Pete
