Why do old instruments blow so good ?

Hi from England,
I have just purchased an old Courtois 4 valve euphonium that has been really badly dented both around the bell and around the lower bow sections.
In fact, most of the outer exposed tubing has a dent somewhere along the line.
It dates from around 1900 ( picture coming soon )and was to be thrown away !
It plays like a dream !
There are no duff notes, and after working the valves, all nots blow freely and with full sound with only minor intonation problems caused by the conversion to low pitch.
This is the second instrument I have purchased of this age which really opened my eyes & ears as to how well they can sound and play.
Any ideas ?
Best wishes,
