Another tool that I have found invaluable in a stop-gap repair situation is a pair of pliers that have had the jaws treated with some spray-on rubber. Grips, but doesn't scar the finish. I also keep an old t-shirt around. It's a great material for dealing with instruments, and also doubles as a slide puller. A wooden spoon wrapped in the t-shirt does wonders for rolling out dents in the bell. Also several extra nylon valve guides are good to have on hand.

And remember, the two tools everyone should have: duct tape and WD-40. If it's supposed to move and doesn't use the WD-40. If it's moving and shouldn't use the duct tape.

(that's humor...I would never use WD-40 on an instrument...)
