Remember, the repiratory system has more uses than the exchange of gases, it is also used fro childbirth and defication - Valsalva is used for the respiratory system to bear down in the body. There are many problems with brass players with this primarily because they are using to much air pressure and this triggers valsalva. A great description about this is in Dee Stewart's Jacobs Legacy book written by Donald Erb.
