Most Beginning Band books will work just fine. I used Yamaha for a while, then used Accent on Achievement with decent success... I like the ear training with this book a lot. But the method I would use if I went back to teaching beginning band would be Essential Elements. The reason is not pedagogical. Simply, it has tunes in it that the kids seem to really like. Also, it has more "full arrangements" that the kids should be able to play at the end of their first year. I found that there were enough quality tunes in this book to present concerts to the parents at nearly every stage of their development (First year). For second year and older more supplemental music is needed to keep it interesting.
