You mention you were at California State University Long Beach in the 70's. You were in the concert band? I attended a festival of college bands in 1969 in which the CSU Long Beach band was a participant. To this day I have not heard a better college band anywhere. And that includes the great band from University of Michigan (William Revelli) which I heard the same year. The CSULB band at that time used only two tubas (Mirafones?), but those guys were monster players. I'm guessing they studied with the Los Angeles tuba greats; i.e., Roger Bobo, Jim Self, Tommy Johnson, etc.
