I got to hear Arnold Jacobs play Sensemaya at Ravinia around 1959, on one rehearsal, under Eleazar de Carvalho, who was himself a tuba player early on. It was Mr. Jacobs' first time on the piece, he had no prior familiarity with it. He would surely have worked out the part in advance, but the one recording (Stokowski 1949) was not available at the time, and he never ever pissed and moaned about not being able to listen to it in advance. He just played it, and totally rocked! He had the stones to do that, and I have the stones to tell you I was there. I know we're not all Arnold Jacobses out here, but I believe he had the ability because he had the stones.
