You can add the 5 valve Miraphone 191 and 1291 to the over $5k list, but just barely. And none of these come with a case. For recreational tuba playing I think that the best bet is to find a good used horn. Just make sure that it is something that you have a chance to play test before buying.

If you really want new, I agree with the person who said that the new King 2341 is a good choice. It can be had for around $4000 in lacquer with a hard case, and in the mid $4k range in silver(either satin or bright) with a case. I have the one without a removeable leadpipe and am very happy with it. The only tuba that I played recently that I liked as much or better was a Miraphone 1291, but that is about $2000 more than the lacquer version of the King, and I would find it hard to justify the additional expense.
