As stated by some already, Fletcher was an incredible player and the only British tubist I have had the opportunity to meet and hear live several times. Still one of the finest players and people I have ever heard and met. As for others, names already mentioned that I have heard on record (that are worth mentioning) are Owen Marshall and James Gourley and Patrick Harrild (spelling? that is how it is spelled on the CD jacket!). As for recordings, I have many and they are excellent. I won't bother mentioning all of the PJBE and the London Brass recordings. Any and all of them provide excellent examples of how the tuba should be played. Two I will make special mention of is the PJBE final recording entitled "PJBE FINALE". Out on CD by Chandos (CHAN 8490), it offers wonderful playing on Andre Previn's "Troilet". An awesome piece that should be played more often. The other is the "Greatest Hits" CD if for nothing else, the "Pictures" alone.
Other recordings:
The English Brass Ensemble "Russian Brass"
---- James Gourley (mostly) w/ Patrick Harrild
on Romeo and Juliet. The tuba playing on this
is incredible. A must have for any brass
player. Wonderful euphonium playing on
R & J by Robert Childs.
London Symphony Brass directed by Eric Crees.
---- Excellent playing and arranging on any of
this groups recordings
London Brass Virtuosi conducted by David Honeyball
---- David Honeyball, former student of John Fletcher,
has put together a great ensemble. Unfortunately,
the group does not include players name on the
extensive liner notes. They have a few CD's out.
My favorites are 1) "Royal Eurostar" which includes
Derek Bourgeois's (also a former Fletcher student)
"William and Mary Suite" (dedicated to the memory
of John Fletcher and has a hefty tuba part). The
works are great as well) and 2) "Music for Brass and
Percussion" which includes many brass ensemble standards.
Black Dyke Mills Band "The Planets" with Philip Goodwin, Ken Ferguson,
---- John Gillam and Matthew Routley on tuba, Robert Childs (solo)
and John French on euphs. This is the entire planets, complete
with chorus. Well worth having in your collection. It is on
DOYEN Records, DOY CD 050.

My 2 pounds Sterling for what they're worth!
